that was what i was afraid of.BUT is ver.8 of director any better on THIS
specific problem?

I have had similar experience... in my case upgrading from one Dell NT box
to a newer one made the D7 sound quality appalling unless I set the
sounddevice = "QT3mix" as you have been advised.
The project I was working on installed Qt for video playback anyway so I
never actually investigated which specific sound cards were involved - which
I assume is the cause of the difficulty.
Anyway I think we have to say that Director7 cannot reliably playback sound
on NT without you installing Qt for this purpose.
