My suggestion would definitely be to move up to D8.5.  Many bugs were 
fixed from 7.02 and 8, and more were fixed in D8.5.  If you are not 
using the 3D code in your project you won't be impacted by it being 
there.  The media loading problem (which to the user appears to be a 
problem with sound) was the thing that convinced us to do the move 
from D8 to D8.5.

The problem is that if you are playing a sound, and you do something 
which causes Director to load a large amount of assets (e.g., going 
to a frame that has many high bit depth graphics on it), sound will 
stutter, or stop while loading these other assets.  The problem has 
been fixed in 8.5
