What I normally do is link one EXTERNAL cast to the movie named
"video" which will eventually be empty. In early development, I will
place the temporary video files in "video".

When I am ready to cross-platform test, I create two external casts
named "qt" and (for my purposes) "avi", each with identical
references to movies (i.e. cast member 1 in both casts is the same
video content in a different format).

Then, when the movie starts up I call:

on startMovie
   if the platform contains "MAC" then
     castLib("video").fileName = "qt"
   else
     castLib("video").fileName = "avi"
   end if

end startMovie

~~~~
Be wary though -- sometimes in authoring the cast gets stuck. I often add:
on stopMovie
castLib("video").fileName = "video"
end stopMovie
~~~~

Then, in a 1-bit place holder I have this script. The reference of
the name of the member is set and remembered in early development.
Note the #range -- these are the names of the video members.

--BEWARE: CODING FROM THE HIP
property pVideo

on getPropertyDescriptionList
   p_List = [:]

   addProp p_List, #pVideo, [#default: 0 , \
#format: #string, #range: ["vidOne", "vidTwo", "vidThree",
"vidFour"], #comment: "Which Video:"]

   return p_List

end getPropertyDescriptionList

on beginSprite me
   --change the member to a video
   sprite(me.spriteNum).member = member(pVideo)
   --start the video
   if the platform contains "Mac" then
     sprite(me.spriteNum).movieRate = 1
   else
--this works with DirectMedia Xtra
     videoPlay(sprite(me.spriteNum))
   end if

end beginSprite me

on enterFrame me
   --movieRate stuff here
end enterFrame me

~~~~
This way there are no false references and no need to carry extra
casts in memory.
