I agree with you to some extent..but..in this day and age I would be even
more hesitant to hand over anything to a corporate client that deals with
code. I enjoy helping the people on the list, they usually are not asking
for us to do the project for them so no big deal. But your statement on "I
can do it again" may not be so true in the near future. Yes you "could" do
it again, but with the USPTO not having any intelligence let alone common
sense left, your code could soon become a part of someone's "patent" and
then the tables get turned on you and you can't write your code again or
anything along the lines of it with some sue happy laywer smacking you for a
lawsuit. Don't think it won't happen, I have had to the use the fact that I
posted a piece of code on this list as proof that it was in the public
domain prior to the signing of a contact with a former client. So in summary
read all contract and assume nothing and charge the clients if they want to
see the code.

Subject: RE: <lingo-l> OT: Giving away your lingo

You know, I even go a step farther and comment out all of my code as to
what each bit is doing.....

I've never had an issue where someone ripped apart my stuff so they could
do it themselves -- although I was paid to train a few people in
basics...I had no problem with that.

Personally, I have to weigh all this against the possibilities of the work
life I could be leading -- hell I'm not lifting anything heavy, I don't
have to kill things or cut things up, I don't have to serve food to
anyway...instead I get to work from home in my own chair, listen to my own
music, watch my own dvds, take breaks to play with my nine-month-old
daughter, jump in the pool.....and work at 5am if I choose to.

If I have to give away my code for this what the hell do I care? I'm the
guy that wrote it, I can do it again. And, if anything, I've found my
demeaner to be what gets me more work in the future; I doubt I'd get as
much work if I made a big stink about giving out my source code -- and I'm
serious, I'm not trying to be funny with that....I've gotten more return
clients because of what they know that I can do, and sometimes BECAUSE
they've gone through my code. Actually I remember one gig I got I had to
show some code before I got the job....if I didn't do that, I wouldn't
have had 3 months of work...
