Yes. It works, albeit it wastes a lot of disk space and time. When you get the VM system and define the userid for the guest, ATTACH the disks you used to that id using DEDICATE in the directory entry and use the same physical addresses as you had in the LPAR. It should IPL fine. That said, I'd wait for VM unless it's really easy for you to get to the HMC. If you're new at Linux, you'll have some false starts, and it can get kind of frustrating if you have to back up and restart or try something different and you have to call down and get a LPAR restarted.
