Too bad LUNs can't be virtualized the way DASD can.

How about:
-) Have a system to be cloned (golden image) mounted on a cloning system
(controller)
-) Chroot to it
-) Modify networking info, host name, LUN, etc in appropriate files
-) mkinitrd
-) zipl
-) exit

Now you have a LUN that can be copied and should IPL correctly.

(you may then want to go back and reset the text files in the golden image
to a known state)

That's basically what the clone script is in the "LPAR to Virtual Servers
in Two Days" redbook is.  It utilizes VM's FLASHCOPY command - I guess
there is no parallel to the "h/w services to copy the LUN.", so the
process would have to be more manual.
