Sorry, we have 9 complete dasd to use for the installation, not mdisks. It would be one VG and only one LV.

Are you saying that you want to move to an environment where you'll be using 9 separate minidisks that make up an LVM VG, with multiple file systems carved out of it on multiple logical volumes? If so, then with the caveat that your /boot directory needs to be on a "real" minidisk and not an LVM LV, then you should be able to do it without reinstalling. Check out http://linuxvm.org/Info/HOWTOs/movefs.html for an example of how to do it for one file system, then just repeat.
