I'm not sure I understand this one. You mean if you have multiple servers sharing a filesystem and you install a RPM on that filesystem, RPM fails? Is it a read-only filesystem? How would the file already be there if you haven't yet installed the package? Or do you mean that installing from more than one host sharing that filesystem causes issues? Obviously if you're sharing a filesystem, one of the servers should be the master and all software should be installed from that one, always. The RPM databases will be different on those other hosts, so you can't install from those without creating a mess. -Sam -----Original Message----- From: Linux on 390 Port [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Rick Troth Sent: Thursday, April 13, 2006 7:27 PM To: LINUX-390@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: install methods On Thu, 13 Apr 2006, Post, Mark K wrote: > On a SUSE or Red Hat system, RPM is the only way > software should be installed. ... While this is correct from a support perspective I continue to find lack of satisfaction with RPM. And Mark is right that all should become familiar with RPM. The downfall of RPM is that it is completely unsuited to shared content installations. I have heard that a new revision fixes the worst problem: If a file is already in place, and is the right file (because it was previously installed onto a shared disk or filesystem) older RPM would choke. Since the subject line says "install methods" I figure I should mention this, even though it strays outside of the "supported" realm which most of us need. Most of us are likely to need to go there if we do virtual. -- R; ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390
