This is unlikely.  He's either using NTFS--which supports big files--
or FAT32, which supports 4GB files.  So that's not the problem being
seen.

I think that using a mount type of "cifs" (presuming that his kernel
supports it) rather than "smbfs" will make the problem just go away.
