This question could be asked on the VM list and you may get better answers. :)
Or maybe just different answers. :)
As I recall there have been some discussions about alternative ways to control 
a VTS there.

VTS.  There are several options for getting data on the tapes.  DDR is
included with VM, so some people use it.  VM:Backup from CA is the
leading commercial backup product for VM.  IBM also has a backup

guests from VM, you MUST shut down the guests to get a consistent
