This question could be asked on the VM list and you may get better answers. :) Or maybe just different answers. :) As I recall there have been some discussions about alternative ways to control a VTS there.

The RMS component of DFSMS/VM is required to issue tape mounts to the VTS. There are several options for getting data on the tapes. DDR is included with VM, so some people use it. VM:Backup from CA is the leading commercial backup product for VM. IBM also has a backup product, and there are probably some others. If you back up your Linux guests from VM, you MUST shut down the guests to get a consistent backup. If you don't want to do that, you need to run backup software on the Linux guests. Again, there are several choices. We're still looking at some of them here, and haven't found any that we really like.
