I want to point out that "the situation that the recent distributions are only available as 64-bit" was at the insistence of IBM itself. I personally still think that 31-bit versions are valuable, even in a z/Architecture-only world. (Which it really isn't. There are still people out there happily running 31-bit hardware, even though they make up only a fraction of IBM's install base.)
