Thanks to all who responded. I ended up using the #cp vi vmsg 0 1 method. Prior to deleting /var, I created the new disk space first. I updated the .conf file, ran mkinitrd and zipl. Rebooted linux. When it came up, the new dasd was available so I partitioned it and formatted it. I made a backup copy of /var and then got into the mess that started this thread. I finally got that to work a little while ago, but still kept getting errors about the superblock being bad. I repartitioned again and reformatted again and linux was happy this time around. I don't know what it didn't like the first time but it's working now.
