If you have few time to use HMC, or the access is restrict, you can test your media (CD/DVD) at home before use them. It is possible on a workstation using Hercules 3.06 (Windows or Linux flavor), command ipl_dvd. If the DVD boots on Hercules, it will boot on HMC without problems. I use this way to test media wrote from ISO files.
