You can, but that can cause serious problems at the z/VM level.  There have 
been cases where a hard coded MAC address in a Linux guest has caused another 
guest to not be able to get the MAC address CP wanted to give to it, but 
couldn't.  Depending on the importance of that other guest, really bad things 
can happen.
