Greetings Mark, z/VM provides a great hosting environment for Linux on System z (or Linuz as I like to call it now that I have seen Lintel being used all over). Like any system however, it does require administration services. If you have a mainframe at your shop today, your zOS, zVSE or zTPF system admin should be able to help with a lot of the z/VM required parts/terminology, however you want someone that can manage z/VM in the loop. Having a good performance and transaction processing tool should of course help ease problem identification (provides you with the insight needed to act, however you have to have someone in place that understands what needs to be done, and can then get provide the required service).
CSL WAVE can also be used to help simplify z/VM system administration requirements (green screens no longer really required). Truly a fantastic tool. Check out the video from its homepage: http://www.csl-int.com/ All the high level tools in the world are really great, however if you don't know how something really works, its really hard to fix it when its not working the way you would like it to be. A clear problem with our push towards self service and automation.
