OH MY GOD, FINALLY someone with the same problem!
I have the EXACT same problems! I've asked everywhere and no one has a
clue. Everytime I booted an SMP kernel, I couldn't even get all the way
up. It always died in the same place, and it seemed to be where it was
touching the IDE interfaces. After a while, I discovered that it didn't
seem to like my CDROM drive (but only when I was booting an SMP
kernel). So I disconnected it, and sure enough, it came all the way up,
and I saw two CPUs in /proc/cpuinfo just like Jon. but then i started
getting kernel panics just like jon too.
Windows NT and Windows 2000 seem to be totally fine with everything. But
just as a last resort, I ordered a new board and new CPUs just in case
something was flaky. I'm expecting those in a couple of days. I don't
have high hopes, but I will try.
I also turned off power management stuff too. I also happen to be using
stock Red Hat 6.1, as well as my own kernels that I've tried building.
Thanks for listening :)
