Really? And all this time I thought I was merely sharing my opinons like
most people on Usenet. Damn.

Actually, it was a lighthearted dig at the person I was replying to. Nothing
more nothing less. Take it as you wish though as I know that until
mindreading is possibile I can't prove it, and I know that even being
confronted with proof you are wrong changes the tireless drone drone drone
of your paranoid rantings.

So why are you getting so annoyed by a harmless Englishman who pays £10
(about $16 US) per month to post his opinion? Could it be that I am not
allowed one in your world because it is not yet approved by the GNU central
politics division? Why do I scare you so? Why do the others on your list? I
see I made the list now, btw, Thankyou.

Thank you Bilik. I do not get paid by Microsoft or anyone else to share my
opinions in advocacy newsgroups. So you are right, it is not relevant.
Doesn't enter into it.
Do you get paid by Red Hat?

Another might be I don't remember nor care a whit about model numbers, and am
more interested in substantive debate than quibbling about details.
[... a hopelessly complex 7 step install which resembles Norm's nightmare
far more than doc roger's "put in the disk, hit enter a couple times, and
you're done", and includes far more typing than I would ever consider
reasonable for a commercial end-user OS installation, not that I would ever
consider a commercial end-user OS installation procedure reasonable...]

Note from Max: The software has been copied to the hard drive, but the system
is in an entirely unusable state as concerns video, network support, and many
other parts of the computer. Doc may want to quibble about the definition of
a computer, but either way we're a long way from being done cleaning up after
Bill Gate's messes.
[... multiple procedures which are far LONGER and MORE COMPLEX than Norm's
nightmare to begin with...]
I suppose if your intent is to sling mud (i.e.. ad hominem attack) simply by
pointing out minor discrepancies, instead of substantive discussion on the
issues discussed here, you may well consider showing Gateway's current 2300
install is different than the one Norm (or the one I used on my Gateway
laptop, regardless of model numbers or hardware revs) got an indeterminate
time in the past (and when a 2300 had an indeterminate similarity to the one
Gateway is currently providing a standard install procedure for). However, I
believe the fact that your posted procedure is much WORSE than Norm's, and
quite frankly shocks me (they didn't have any standard install procedure, just
an installation troubleshooting process, when I had my difficulties in 1997)
with both its extent and its intricacy, should put to rest any claims that you
are concerned with the issues involved, and are far more interested in
character assassination (i.e.. ad hominem attack).

Exactly.
/ == root directory
. == current directory
~ == user's home directory
And, based on the fact that you didn't know that...
Steve == idiot
You may not care what I think Steve, but you're not fooling ANYONE into
believing you know anything about computers. You demonstrate your
ignorance all the time, but this one might just take the cake.
How many Linux/UNIX books did you say you had on your bookshelf? How
many have you actually read?
Since, after years of using DOS/Windows and with all those Linux books,
you still don't know the difference between . and /, I'd have to conclude
that Linux is just too difficult for you. Just leave it at that, and go
play with Windows.

LOL! I've been trying to get through to them on the phone for four days to
try to activate a second receiver. You'll just get the "due to unusually high
call volumes, we can't take your call now. (click)".
Seems their phone skills match their java skills.
