You'd probably get a LOT further in your quest to make everyone think and
act just like you do if you were less heavy handed and insulting.

I realize all this independent non-Joe thought irks you to death, but if
you were nicer you might win a few converts.

Max doesn't understand "nice", therefore he always gets treated like that.
He sets himself up to be the laughing stock and whipping boy on purpose for
some reason.

Indubitably. Also FreeBSD, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, OSF/1 (Tru64?), QNX,
and even that old klunker Xenix, which is nevertheless a workable
alternative, if one wants truly ancient (it was created when 286s
were in vogue).

And even Windows 95//98/98SE/Me/NT3.51/NT4/2k, whatever
works for you.

Since I don't have one, you'll have to forgive me if I don't
allow you to drive it. :-) (I think my grandfather had a
nice 1963 pushbutton tranny Chrysler at one point, though.)

Besides, the original Unices didn't have X, shared libraries, TCP/IP,
C++, modular loading, or NFS. Unix now has all of these, as does Linux.
(In fact, I think Unix developed many of these first.)

And these operations would be what, specifically? I'm curious.

Again, which apps specifically?  I will say this for Microsoft;
Office is extremely convenient. (Dangerous, in light of such
offerings from the user community as ILOVEU and Melissa,
annoying because of that paper clip, and insidious because
it encourages certain proprietary file formats by default,
but convenient, nonetheless.)

>
>Try Netscape some time (Windows version will do)

Netscape != Linux. Netscape has some problems -- in fact, it has a
*lot* of problems. On HP-UX, for example, it bus-errors often.
On Linux, Java applets will cause it to hang in a peculiar state
that can only be rectified by the dreaded 'kill -9', which I
suspect could leave some semaphores dangling.

No, I'm not happy with Netscape. IE works reasonably well
for me here at work, although it hiccups now and again; sometimes
I have to click on a link twice, and it hangs on a rare occasion.

Of course, the entire OS hiccups on me now and again; the most
prominent hiccup being the loss of balloon help/tooltips
when one passes the mouse button over the icons on the bottom
Start/control bar; that one is "fixed" by logging out and logging
in again. I've also seen some other peculiar behavior that leads
me to believe that NT is not the most reliable of operating
systems when it comes to presentation of icons.

(Damned registry.)

Agreed, although lynx is pretty good for text-only.
I'll have to try Amaya again -- last time it was
pretty problematic -- and see what Mnemonic is up to.

And then there's old grand-daddy Mosaic; I assume that's
still around.

You overpaid. I can download it for free. :-) (Note, however, that
there are certain fixed costs related to operating a computer and
the Internet connection; these costs for me are $30/month for
a 56k line -- which is looking like an anachronism in this increasingly
DSL/Cable world, but I'm not quite ready to switch yet.)

Your emphasis on "expelling" people is not going to raise educational
standards. In short, you seek to raise "performance" statistics by
hiding weaker students from those statistics. In short, this is a scam,
because it doesn't do anything to increase the nation's education level.
It merely makes certain statistics easier to misapply.

"serve as an example" ? If the point of the criminal justice system was
to "make examples" of people, wouldn't it be more effective to publically
execute them or stone them to death ?

Be aware that the kind of barbarism you are advocating no longer exists
in civilised countries.

What is wrong with discussing environmental issues in schools ? I don't

Why are you so strongly opposed to homosexuality ? I notice you offered no
rebuttal to my argument that your logic points to homosexuality being a
good thing ( since breeding is not a side effect of homosexual activities )
So what's the problem, are you just a closet bigot ?

The MS supporters prefer to keep handing over their $$$
to get their hands on "the only(sic) operating system
designed just for you and your home PC."

http://shop.microsoft.com/product/windows/msline.htm

$289 for Windows ME...

...that's MORE EXPENSIVE than Windows 2000 Professional.

I don't want to get overly cynical here[1] but it seems to
me like this is a marketing excercise to find out just how
ignorant/gullible the "buying public" really is.
