You didn't mention if you are replacing Windows, or whether you plan to
run a dual-boot setup. Personally, I recommend that newbies install
a dual-boot setup, so that you can learn Linux at your leisure, without
feeling like you have to get everything set up correctly right away.
Secondly, I recommend Linux-Mandrake 7.2. Mandrake is the most
newbie-friendly distro I've seen, and is very current. Mandrake has
put a great deal of effort into making it one of the easiest
installations out there. In fact, you might be very surprised at just
how simple a Linux installation can be.

The question is not whether MS did shut Linux out or any other O/S out...
but whether they attempted to do so or not.
The latter is illegal...the former is successfully doing something
illegal.

I don't understand problems reading pdf files. Xpdf and gv do antialiasing
and should look at least as good as anything on windows.

Just go to edit/preferences and change them. The real problem is
that most web pages specify fonts that you don't have and the
substitutions look bad.

No, Microsoft and Apple put a lot of effort into making fonts look good
on cheap monitors. X wants lots of real pixels. However, I think the
default configuration looks a lot better on Mandrake 7.2. If you have
a dual boot configuration you might want to tell it to grab the windows
fonts too.

Because OS-X was written by people with a decent education with the
people, whereas LoseDOS was written by a bunch of high school
hacks who think that "goto" is an sophisticated programming construct.

When there are more user friendly Windows programs that do all the same things?

Microsoft certainly could. If they wanted to or really thought that anyone
wanted them to. Truth is UNIX is hard to use. X is clunky and the
johnny-come-lately Windows UI ripoffs just aren't nearly as good as Windows.

Well, those may be issues, but they'd be subsumed into the larger-scale
question I asked - note the highlighted word "all". However, I notice that
Aaron hasn't actually given either a yes or a no on this question, despite
being involved in the thread past this point.

As I recall, Lenin and his gang went around yelling slogans like:
"XLEB!" ("Bread!") and
"MIR!" ("Peace!")
I don't recall Lenin and his gang going around yelling:
"Help build A Police State for Russia!"
"Executions for all who disagree with us"
Yet, that's exactly what they 'gave' to Russia"

Is it? Let's compare.
My scanner, drives, display adapter, webcam and soundcard lack Win311
drivers, so I wouldn't be able to use them with it; this would be an
advantage of ME over 311. ME supports better, albeit far from perfect,
memory management and tasking. This is an advantage over 311. ME has a
TCP/IP driver included (311 didn't include that, did it?); this is an
advantage over 311. ME has a more flexible way of managing files, folders
and shortcuts than 31; another benefit. ME supports long file names;
another benefit over 31.
So, in what ways is ME worse than 311?
