you're using semantics to avoid the idea being communicated.

IMHO, I'd rather have 50%+ of the business and ecommerce market
than the "My Cat Fluffy" or "My Trip to DisneyLand" web sites,
but ymmv. Apache can have the thousands and thoudands of one
hit/month web sites, for all I care.
When you look at sites with SSL (even according to Netcraft's
own numbers) Windows dominates.
> it has the lead in the number of website defacements,
NT does, not Win2K. Besides, even with NT and 2K combined,
Linux still gives Windows a run for its money. On some months,
Linux will smoke Windows with defacements, other months, Windows
will eek out the lead.
> a fact well documented on the site devoted to tracking this matter.
Attrition.org? If you look at attrition.org you'll see Linux holds
it's own in the defacements category.
> The common fud is that "if Unix ever became as
> popular a platform as windows nt, it would have

Which is a fact. As Linux becomes more popular, we're seeing new
attacks, we're seeing it used as distributed DoS clients and
servers (in the now infamous ebay amazon attacks), we seeing
record high defacements, etc.
> - In the light of the fact that Unix, which powers over 2/3
> of the websites on the net
(mainly all the "My cat fluffy" sites, oh yeah, and this
overinflated number includes each virtual host on a server as
another server which incorrectly inflates the numbers)
A number which is on the decline. Unix also powers less than
half of the SSL sites, a category where Windows dominates.
This tells us that when money and security are on the line,
people trust Windows more than Unix.
It's also interesting that you lump Linux in with Unix.
When you need to give Linux some credibility, you lump it
with Unix, but when you don't want to make it seem like
Linux is just another useless Unix, you claim Linux != Unix.
So which is it?
The truth is, of those Unix web virtual hosts (not servers,
there are far less than 2/3 total Unix servers) less than
1-2% of those are Linux servers. Most are Solaris or BSD.
> suffers far fewer website breakins than windows nt,
Linux frequently beats Windows at this.

Minority of "My Cat Fluffy" web sites, but a strong majority
of eCommerce business sites.
> it becomes clear that their position is devoid of merit.
But when you really look at the facts, you see that you
really don't know what the hell you're talking about.

These numbers are from April 2000 alone. Check out attrition.org
Those are more timely and cumulative numbers. You'll see that
Linux frequently exceeds (usually by a large margin) the number
of Windows defacements.
It's also interesting to note that attrition (not accidentally)
lumps WindowsNT and Windows 2000 together.
Had they seperated them, you would find that Windows 2000 would
have the lowest number of defacements.
So, what have we learned here? That people using NT and Linux
as their web servers are simply not taking security seriously.
We know that NT and Linux can both be deployed in a secure
maner to prevent most attacks under most conditions (because
we've never seen www.microsoft.com hacked, or www.redhat.com),
but yet there are all these thousands of defacements.
Why? That's the question.

Wrong. We bought a USB Sandisk compact flash card reader. It
wouldn't work under windows 2000, so my tech was going to return it as
defective. I had just installed the 2.4 kernel and asked if we could
try it out. We plugged it in, and it worked flawlessly. It's great
to run an OS that actually can use your hardware! (Turns out that it
was Adaptec Easy-CD that was causing a 'conflict' -- what kind of
crappy operating system sets up an environment in which 3rd party

My true story is just one of a hundred I could post every week if I
wanted to. If I posted every windows crash story I get, I'd probably
be accused of spamming.
I use two PCs at home, one a P200 with 64Mb RAM running a modified
Suse 6.4 distro with a 2.4 kernel. The other is a P500 with 128Mb RAM,
running Windows 98SE.
The Linux PC has _never_crashed, and has only been down because of
powercuts and upgrades. The Windows PC crashes and requires reboots
with extreme regularity.
