I beg to differ. We're talking about markets, aren't we?
Mercedes competes within its market space, which is defined as upscale,
higher quality products.
They compete with the likes of Bmw, Jaguar, etc., they don't have to compete
with Chevy and Ford directly. Target marketing has been around as long as
markets and marketing.
The fact that they will sell less cars in a smaller market is offset by what
customers pay for their cars.
But then there are many factors that contribute to a companies profitibility
other than market share.

I think this is not only possible but probable. But, and this is big but,
many fail to realize or remember that software is typically 20% or less of
the TCO of an IT structure.
The sheer ubiquity factor of MCSE's (be nice) that can be had to for
reasonable cost to manage NT server farms (small to large) still offsets the
cost of free software and Unix engineers, analysts, and developers.
Especially when the target platform is still windows in some shape or form.

LOL! forgot, and those sort of MS software buyers also live in a trailor
park because they spent the good part of there savings on buying Microsoft
software thinking there were giving their children a head start.

Ahhh.....you must have been to the UK recently.

I like this current policy of making sure we all become "passive
bystanders" - nothing to do with the way we all then welcome the CCTV into
the streets and ID cards, then...noooo sirrreeee..... It`s easier to
control a population by making it frightened of itself, than making it
frightened of the government (polarity response rebellion ensues when you
subdue people en masse with sticks and stones) - that way the population
welcomes any control that is introduced in order to make it "safer".

Then why was IBM dragged into Federal Court over the issue of

At the time, IBM's contracts PROHIBITED any non-IBM employee from
programming thier machines.

Why would that be?

That is grounds for being thrown off many or most networks. Most
require a specific netmask and often a specific set of DNS servers.
There is currently a plague of misconfigured systems with incorrect
netmasks.

Not to say that that won't always be enough, and will be cleared
when you next reboot.

You are also assuming that someone else has done a lot of other
configuration when setting up the system distribution that you are
using, because there are dozens of other aspects that need to be
set correctly. Even at the hardware and TCP/IP levels, let alone
if you actually want to run any standard clients or daemons.

Nice try, but no banana.
