Indeed. There was an interesting 'USENET the RPG' (I think it was Steffan
O'Sullivan, or Carl Cravens) post made a long time ago, where it asserted
that you can't really make someone else look like a fool on USENET, you can
only make yourself look like a fool, or try to lure someone else into
making themselves look like a fool. The latter can only happen if you're
responding to their lure ... so if you killfile someone, they can't "harm"
you.

In fact, it is impossible to take over free software with the GPL; thus
the Microsoft whining, as you mentioned. Microsoft seems to have
finally "woken up and smelled the coffee". They cannot compete against
the GPL. RSM knew it all, GNU proponents knew it all along, and most of
the world learned it when they started hearing about Linux. The GPL is,
in this respect, so anti-competitive that not even Microsoft can stop
it, with all the power at their disposal (including the current tirade
spawned by this growing recognition.)

In fact, it does. But far less than Microsoft. In the current
environment, a software author (and even a software producer) who wishes
to earn a living has a choice to keep his code secret or to leave it
open. Any non-GPL open license, unfortunately, leaves the code open to
becoming a secret, if you know what I mean. But to GPL the code
sacrifices any hope of commercially benefiting from the code, in
perpetuity, which may be more than some authors (and all producers)
might be willing to accept.
Once the GPL has done its job, however, of destroying secret code, there
will be no need to GPL software, and an author or producer is free to
choose whatever licensing arrangements they might pursue. Such
licensing arrangements will be with the distributors, though, not the
end-users. End users have no more need to "license" software than any
person has need to "license" the work of any other author.
Ironically, this introduces one of the core concepts of .NET into the
picture. Because it makes perfect sense to *subscribe* to the works of
an author or producer; magazines and newspapers are not replaced by
books. But this *only* makes sense if the works themselves, not an
inviolate and obscured form wrapped in a trade secret, are what is being
subscribed to.
