Must be why the sites with the most demanding throughput requirements
are doing PRECISELY what you deride, Chad, and stringing together
hundreds of Linux boxes.

Why is that?

Liar.

Sun Microsystems workstations are under $1000 each...with FULL licenses.

And Linux is cheaper than a floppy drive....

Figures.

The real problem is the claim of control over any future 'work as a
whole' where only a part originates under the GPL. It is a seriously
bizarre view of copyright law to claim that existing code already under
different restrictions can become a derived work under control
of the GPL under any circumstances. If this view can possibly
be correct, Microsoft can claim ownership and control of any of
their competitor's works that link to any Microsoft dll's (and I
suspect every Windows product does...). It would be equally
(un)reasonable for them to make the same claim as the GPL.

It prevents many potentially useful things from being possible at
all with GPL'd code. If by 'user' you mean a person who
cannot assemble his own set of components where some
parts are GPL'd and some not, there will be no legal way
to obtain these things.

You are reading that backwards. It doesn't say anything about
causing software to be shared. It talks about restrictions on
how it can be shared, and if it isn't 100% GPL'd then it can't
be shared at all, and no user is going to get it.
