Democracy is nothing more than a tyranny of the manipulated masses.
In fact the democratic form government is specifically PROHIBITED at the
state and federal level. The Constitution specifies that not only is the
US federal government a republic, but also that EVERY state which enters
the union must also be AND REMAIN a republic.

Go check the behavior of the IRS and tell us that the more principles
of communism that get implemented (corporate taxes, social security,
medicare, etc.) the nicer the police get.

Agreed, although I would want to also have what NT implemented: the
ability to automatically convert from FAT the NTFS. Apparently that's
done by a bit of legerdomain during startup; if one tells NT to convert,
it will convert upon the next reboot -- which IIRC is requested by NT
with the familiar popup "Windows requires a reboot" requester (I forget
the precise wording).
It may not have been much of an issue however; Win9x isn't really
designed for multiuser use.

Because it's klunky. I can't really give a better answer, but
check out http://www.iarchitect.com/mshame.html for a more
detailed explanation as to why it's A Bad Thing(tm).
Mind you, at this point everyone's probably more or less used to it.
