Hmmmmmm, does that mean that their salesmen can be charged with FRAUD?

Because *THEY* say that M$ Software is suitable for everything.

That's how Microsoft spells "success"! :D

Yes, I can see that you never let the facts get in the

What I'm saying is that it wasn't necessary. It was
convenient, but CP/M would have served in the
role if needed.

In order to 'combine' CP/M and Windows they would
have had to provide their own CP/M clone, or cut a deal
with Digital Research.

DOS didn't provide enough "proprietary lock in"; clones for
it are a dime-a-dozen. Windows was Microsoft's answer to that
problem, and would have been so even if CP/M had won. It
would not have provided any more lock-in than DOS did.

Frankly, the level of vendor-lock DOS can provide is trivial.
It just doesn't *do* very much beyond what something like a
language standard library would do for you anyway.

It's kinda hard to see why ROM BASIC could be expected to do
any such thing- it did not have such an effect on any other platform,
after all.

Even with a "monopoly" on DOS, there were alternatives to Windows:
there was GEM, as I discussed in an earlier post. It was very like
Windows in the early days. It was even distributed the same way,
bundled with the app that used it.

Well, I wouldn't say that. MS has some very strong
products- Windows 95 is going to give OS/2 2.0
a run for its money in any scenario. It's got virtually
the entire featureset of OS/2, plus some new things.
And MS does know how to sell developers on a
technology.

More fundamentally, Windows NT is going to be
problematic for IBM as long as they can't get
Workplace OS up to snuff.

Windows had some reasonable competition from
time to time, but never any competiton that was
unambiguously superior.

Even if that were true (and it's NOT), being TAUGHT something is NOT
the same as being the one who figured it out in the first place!

They can try to get in. The guards can tell them to go away.
If the BSA guys try to gain unauthorized access to the building's
interior, then you detain them and call the cops.

Until a court rules otherwise and is not overruled by a higher court, the
text of 18 USC 106(1) I quoted *is* copyright. The Constitution sets out the
purpose of copyright, and authorizes Congress to define and regulate it, but
the law as written by Congress, enforced by the executive branch, and
interpreted by the courts *is* copyright. Your wishing otherwise cannot
change that. If you're so sure that 18 USC 106(1) is incorrect, then I
invite you to raise a challenge in court. I'll agree with your views about
what copyright is only when judgment of a competent court, finally upheld,
agrees with you. Until then, you're a willfully ignorant blowhard.

BSA has been running "we are declaring a truce for the month of May"
commercials around Detroit. The idea is that if you turn yourself in,
you can get away with merely paying license fees, vs. license fees plus
up to $150,000 per work infringed.

               <- | | ->
                  V
                h J K L

ctrl-H = Backspace, and you have to mover your finger to the left to type it
ctrl-J = linefeed (w/o carriage return)
