I for one couldn't say; i've never been over to that side of what
once was called "the Iron Curtain". The closest I got was Yugoslavia.

Mind you, that sounds a little weird. Hard-wiring in a light bulb?
Might make sense if it had a zener shunt protector and was some sort
of a LED / solid state device, perhaps -- but it's only been within the
last two or so years that we could manufacture white LED's. Then again,
electrolumiscent panels might work, too.

But you'd still want them field-replaceable in case of, say, a lightning
storm, tornado, earthquake, mudslide, flood, destructive neighbor kid,
helpful not-so-handyman all-thumbs spouse, mad scientists, etc.

Yeah. My Linux box has had, what, four different machines now.
Generally, I move the disk, install whatever drivers are needed in the
kernel, and boot up. A real mess, I tell you, often takes minutes
just to find the screwdriver.

I guess this makes me an amateur. I guess I prefer to be.

> lack of a single-button way to move an old machine

Yes, it's not single button. I compile the kernel, and sure, not
everybody would want to do that. *shrug*

I'm not sure about that. How many Linux or Mac users would switch to
Windows because of it? PC users buy by default MS software anyway, so
while I agree there'd be a benefit to society, I don't think it's
obvious where the revenue stream for Intel/MS is.

And, I note, the problem is not trivial the way Windows is organized
now. In particular the 9x series.

For some reason MS are sending me their security bulletins to my work email
account (I have no idea why I'm so privileged as I don't use MS SW at work
or at home). Just the other day there was a security bulletin for their
telnet server which stated it fixed 10 (TEN) bugs! MS security is still as
big a joke as it has always been.

Just curious why Colossus doesn't rate being classified as
a computer - it was certainly computing before 1943 and was certainly
modern and was very complete.......

You've obviously never heard of Windows Refund day then. I think it
was last year when a guy in australia bought a Toshiba laptop, and
took back the windows for a refund. The store *refused*. He took
it up with Toshiba. Toshiba *refused*. He ended up taking the
issue to Toshiba's headquarters, afairc, before getting anywhere.

He certainly did not get anything from Microsoft, they *refused*,
saying it was Toshiba's problem, and nothing from the store.

You don't need to have the radio removed, just order the vehicle without
the radio fitted. In any area other than Microsoft's, this is possible.
The problem with PCs is that Microsoft have forced most if not all
major vendors to pay them a sum of money when they sell a pc, whether
it has windows installed or not. This means that the manufacturers of
these machines simply do not ship without windows. In the case of
a car and a radio, you have a choice. When Microsoft are involved,
you have no choice.

Err, try reading Maxwell's Equations - there is no difference,
they are the same thing!

History has a habit of disappearing in online publications.
