I am not so sure. However I can describe two events that occured to me
on a similar change.
1. I had "bmv" installed on my Slackware Linux system. However I
could not install the same on RedHat 5.1 as the "makefile" complained of
some strange error in making some ".h" files and stopped.
2. The TeX distribution here is different from that of Slackware and
better and has its directory structure like that suggested in "tug.org".
Also it seems that this one is better and so are the apps "dvips" and
"gs". Also I have some filters built-in.
