Are you sure this is a kernel that works on Assabet? It sounds like you
compiled it yourself. I've managed to compile plenty that only get that far
and then sulk, usually because I configured something wrong or didn't make
dep, or make mrproper before making for a new arch.
Try using a known-good kernel first?

It's about v2.3.99-test0 (ie old) but it'll do for a test.
