Just to convince myself that I (hopefully) wasn't doing something dumb, I
downloaded a pristine copy of gcc-2.95.3 (the March release) and built another
toolchain.  Didn't fix the problem.  I also tried compiling with -O1 and
various -fno-* switches to turn off individual optimizations to see which one
it might possibly be, but didn't find which one was the problem.  Disabling
all optimizations with -O0 results in working binaries (albiet somewhat larger
and possibly slower).  ???
