It is meant to be used with RedBoot as explained in
linux/Documentation/arm/SA1100/Assabet from the latest SA1100 kernel patch.
It certainly can be used with BLOB but I'm not the person to ask for the
details.

No. It can be done as easily with mkfs.jffs instead of mkfs.jffs2.

Supports both Assabet revisions (rev 5 and earlier) which have different
flash types.
