Neponset Noisy Recording

I'm trying to record .wav files using sox via Neponset board but I'm
getting alot of this thumbing/hissing background...Is there a solution
workaround for this?  Also, is there a linux utility to change the mixer
settings?  Thanks in advance.

I'm running 2.4.3-rk2-np1
