On my machine it works fine..
Did you load other sound stuff (like sb.o and adlib_card.o) before
loading awe_wave.o?

The soundcard itself seems to be detected well. Or, did you set these
parameters in awe_config.h? It's not good ususally.
Another possible reason may be sample sharing.
Please try to undefine AWE_ALLOW_SAMPLE_SHARING in awe_config.h.
