Boot from a rescue disk and make sure that your /etc/passwd and
/etc/shadow have a root user (the first entry should be "root" with userid
number 0). If this does not exist, then your other programs, including
the shell will not run. getty/agetty run as root to do what they need to.
If this user does not exist, then these programs can't properly run.
If you do not have the entry, you must create it, leaving the password (in
/etc/shadow) a blank field. reboot, then set the password.
