Normally I will use xf86config, answer the question and it will
generate an XF86Config file for you, then you can adjust by direct change
to the files. The most important thing is you must know the horiz and
vertical frequency of you monitor.
Check where is you X link to? XF86_VGA16, this is the 16 color x
server. XF86_SVGA should give you 256 color or more. I am using an old x
server, new x server may have new super VGA which I am not so sure. Some
X is a wrapper, so there is no link, any expert know about this?
There might be an easier way to configure, but I am still using the
old way.
