For controlling the possible resolutions, the secret is in the
HorizSync and VertRefresh parameters in /etc/X11/XF86Config

There is NO "chip set" in the monitor, you are really referring to
the video card here.

I have the 109S model (nice! :) which uses the frequencies below.
DO NOT use them for your monitor, you'll likely have the monitor
shutoff (or perhaps blow out:).

Get the specs for your 107S from the manual that comes with it, and
put them in. For example, I have...

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Philips 109S"
    VendorName "Unknown"
    ModelName "Unknown"
    HorizSync 30-95
    VertRefresh 50-160
[....]

which will give me 1600x1200x16bpp (with a 16Mb voodoo3 card).

Then in the "Screen" section for your card, make sure that you have
all the relevant modelines selected.

For example, I have...

Section "Screen"
    Driver "svga"
    Device "Voodoo3 "
    Monitor "Philips 109S"
    DefaultColorDepth 16
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 8
        Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 32
        Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
EndSection

Note this line:

    DefaultColorDepth 16

That will make 16bpp the default, no need to do:

        startx -- -bpp 16
