Hi!
I probably have an answer why my login takes about 20 seconds despite tone
dialing and CHAP login: Line probing!
My analog modem is 56k capable and uses V90, so does my ISP's modem. Right
after dial in (just a couple of seconds) the telephone line is probed by
the modems negotiating the fastest baudrate possible. This would explain
the noise I'm hearing and the additional 15 seconds delay until pppd is
started by diald.
Unfortunately the modem sends CONNECT *after* line probing has finished.
However, the first impulse starts after dialing in and *before* line
probing when the physical link is established.
If connect measurement is based on charged time, diald's timing starts about
15 seconds late because it misses the modem negotiating phase about the
line quality.
Now, how do I make diald recognize this delay?
That is, how do I modify diald to start timing after dial in, not at
pppd's call.
There is a major problem though: The connect script (i.e. the chat
command) returns *after* modem negotiation has finished when the line is
effectively ready to transfer some data, such as PPP CHAP login.
Thanks, Walter
PS: Why didn't I think of this earlier?
PPS: Do do not need to reply on that particalar question! ;-)
