Ah! If your distribution does not have PAM support, then remove 
chk_pam from the makefile, and references to checkpw in client.c
(there's an extern at line 25 and a call at line 130 - the latter
probably wants to force a fail).

Next time I have to fix something (what? Never? really?) i'll put some
conditional compliation stuff in
