I have had similar problems with diald 0.16.5 and kernel 2.0.35.  Sorry I
can't give more information, but I'm away from my computer at the moment.
I first encountered the problem after changing setserial and pppd in an
upgrade, although it may have been present and unnoticed before. I believe
it has more to do with the serial devices than anything else.

Try resetting the serial device with minicom or maybe kermit.

I suspect diald is taking a shortcut when initializing the serial port
before attempting redial.
