I have and still use diald on different small networks, some of which
have the dynamic address hack and some which don't.

The time between the first packet and the actual connection
establishment also plays a role here. I have found that adding the
nameserver line three time helps quite a bit since clients won't timeout
just trying to resolve an address. /etc/resolv.conf and equivalents on
other OSs.

The whole purpose of diald is to automate demand dial connections of
which dynamic IPs play a large role. It should work for your clients.
