First, you must customize diald-login for your setup. For me,
that meant commenting out the line that said "echo SLIP" after the login
succeeded.

Then, create a new user for doing logins. You may wish to call
this user "ppp", or perhaps "dialin" or something. "ppp" is a pretty
standard choice.

Then, you make the shell of that new user be the diald-login
script. You do that by editing the last field in the new user's password
entry in /etc/passwd or else use the "chsh" command.

Next, make sure the diald fifo is created and that all the
permissions are sorted out. The script has some comments about that.

Finally, set up a getty on your modem serial port (/dev/ttyS0 or
perhaps /dev/modem). To do that, edit the file /etc/inittab and look at
the existing getty entries that are there for your other terminals. Just
add one for the terminal ttyS0 (or whatever). There is a howto available
for this part...

Make sure your modem is in autoanswer mode, and you're done. Look
at /var/log/messages to view any error messages that appear if it doesn't
work.

What happens is you will dial your computer's phone number, and
the modem will answer. Then you will be presented with a login prompt,
just as though you were sitting in front of the computer. At this point
you could log in with your regular username and have a non-ppp,
dumb-terminal serial connection to your box.

But instead, log in with the username "ppp". You will eventually
need to set up a CHAT script to automatically login for you with this
name.

As soon as you log in as user ppp, the computer will execute
whatever your "shell" is (that's the last entry in the /etc/passwd file),
and if the user ppp has the shell "diald-login" then that script will be
executed, will talk to diald, and establish the ppp connection for you.

There may be a need to add some additional options in your
diald.conf, such as "two-way" or "give-way" or both. See the diald man
page for details.

What I don't understand is how to set the modem into autoanswer
mode. Anyone have any suggestions?
