I've been using mgetty and diald together for several years with
no problem.  diald only locks the line if it is actually trying to
call out.

No, that's not a problem either.  mgetty only wakes up and locks
the line if it detects an incoming ring.  (This might seem like
ESP, but read the mgetty docs if you want to know more.)

I can see a potential complication in setting the routes under the
condition that one is calling into one's home computer from
another computer with full Internet access, but the obvious
solution (just adding a second default route) probably works fine,
although I haven't tested it.
