Thank you very much for your response.
I was most interested to read your comments, as I, too, have no difficulty
in connecting when using my own manually-operated PPP set-up.
As a matter of interest, after having experienced these symptoms, I removed
the SuSE "diald" package and replaced it with the downloaded source code.
This reproduces exactly the same symptoms.
There is no information in the SuSE Support Database that tbrows any light
on the problem.
