I have an awk script that does this. If you have not gotten a solution let
me know and I will mail it to you. It is not perfect and requires mgetty and
diald to work. The biggest problem with it is that it uses the mgetty logs
to determine when to connect to the internet. Under redhat those logs get
rotated every night which means you have to restart the ring detector script
every night. finding the process to kill is not always 100% accurate.
I sometimes end up with multiple ring detector process running and need
to kill them by hand. I need to rewrite that part of the script.

Unix IS user friendly. It's just selective about who its friends are.
