Rob,
I have had RH6.1, in the configuration you are discussing,
since RH6.1 was released. I did have some intermittent
problems initially with what you are seeing. No DIALD
attributed problems, mostly problems attributed to
configuration changes from RH6.0 to RH6.1, as well as,
problems induced by bugs in various Software Packages.
There are at least a couple of Package Updates you need
to get from RedHat. These include: PPP (under Errata)
and the INITSCRIPTS (under Security Updates). If
you look through the errata descriptions you will see
issues related to PPPD Default Routing (in INITSCRIPTS),
as well as, dialup issues using PPP).
I am not using the same chat/dialing script as you.
I am using the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/chat-ppp0.
Also, I am using DIALD 99.1-2.
Why don't you update the Packages described above,
and see if that cures you problem. Also, send me a
copy of your DIALD.CONF File
Jeff
