Do NOT have pppd set to disconnect.

Diald must control the link (it will tell pppd to disconnect). If you set
pppd options to disconnect after 5 minutes you will have diald (rightly)
believe the link was brought down by external forces and it must restart the
link to continue to do it's job.

Disconnect times are set by using diald filters. The default filter file is
normally found at /usr/lib/diald/standard.filter.

One of the strengths of diald is the ability to have varying disconnect
times based on the type of traffic being handled. This is followed by the
ability to restrict/control what brings up the link based on time of day/day
of week rules.

If you do set pppd to disconnect you might as well use the pppd demand
option and take diald out of the control sequence. At one point in time
diald was needed in order to have pppd dial on demand. This is no longer
true. It is still needed for fine control of the link however if that is
one of your needs.

Hope this helps,

Lourdes
