Diald Log analysis

Hello,
    I'm using the diald.monthly script to add up the times in my diald.log,
but I'm having some trouble.

    1. How can I modify it so the month to be checked is specified with a
command line option?  Currently, I just change the date of my system to get
previous months, but I'd like a better way.
    2. How can I get the bytes transferred section working.  There is
something wrong with that part of the script.  It always reports zero.

Attached is the script.  Maybe someone can help to modify it???
