I've had diald running fine for many months now sharing my Internet
connection on my LAN at home. I've been using a Courier V.Everything 56K
external modem with the factory default settings with no problems
whatsoever. We had a storm, and I believe something traveled through our
phone lines and wiped out the Courier, (I've since tested that modem at
work, its fried!) so I plugged in a backup modem which happened to be a
Hayes Optima 56K external. It connects fine and alls well, until the line
drops for one reason or another, and it seems diald is unable to get modem
control and gives a device locked error, and cannot reconnect. Same thing
with another spare Hayes Optima 336. Seems to me there must be some sort of
AT command setting on the Hayes that I'm missing. As I stated, diald and
pppd are all running fine on the USR. When I force 'UP' in diald.conf, it
will keep my connection for days if I let it, redialing and reconnecting
every 20 minutes when my ISP disconnects for inactivity. Also, when I put a
'borrowed' Courier on my machine, it works fine again.
Anyone else experience similar problems with Hayes modem, and if so, is it
really just some initialization string that I would need to add to my chat
script?
