I tried a bunch of other AT commands, ATZ0, AT&F, etc.  but never the hangup
one...I'll give that a whirl.

It is possible that initialization string causes the problem.
Especially since ATZ is a fairly soft reset
(I remember discussion in mgetty context that ATZ in some cases/for
some modem was insuffisient). Try ATH0 as an alternative.

It is easiest to play with intialization string in minicom - if it allows to
dial,
diald should connect.   Default minicom intialization string may be
sufficient
