Unfortunately, there are never any processes with the PID given in the
error. Very strange. That was one of the first things I checked. The only
variable between it working properly and not, is swapping the physical
modem. Maybe that is why Hayes went bankrupt;-)

It just looks like your serial port is locked !!! Chat was not even
called,
so
no attempt to initialize the modem (or talk to the modem) was ever made.
Which process has PID 16037 ?????
