I recently had the problem, that the kernel of the debian-bootdisk
had some ethernet card drivers built in, that probed the
LM78-module (data aquisition for mainboard fan-speed and chip-temperature).

This part can initiate a hard reset - and it did :-)

Maybe, you have a similar problem ... build a new kernel, leaving out
as many drivers as possible.
